Where are you located?
Counselling On Main is one of the health and wellness services offered at Mount Pleasant Massage Therapy, which is located at 3223 Main Street in Mount Pleasant Vancouver. We are on the west side of the street between 16th and 17th avenue.
How long is a session?
Sessions are 60 minutes long generally. However, 90 minute sessions are available if they meet your needs.
Do I need to prepare anything for the first session?
You do not need to prepare anything. Many people like to keep a counselling journal where they note changes, observations or challenges between sessions and also use it as a place to record the gems that come up during session that he or she would like to hold onto when the session is over.
Is your service covered by my extended medical plan?
Counselling offered by Registered Clinical Counsellors with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors is often covered through extended medical plans. Please check with your medical plan to see if you are covered. A receipt with your counsellor’s registration number will be provided for reimbursement. Direct billing for counselling is not an option yet in BC.
How much is your fee?
Counselling fees are $120/session for individuals, $130 for couples, $130 for families. All rates are subject to 5% GST. You may pay by cash, e-transfer, cheque, credit or debit.
Is what we talk about confidential?
What we talk about is definitely confidential. Establishing an environment of safety where you can share absolutely anything is a priority for us. There is nothing that you can share, no matter how taboo or “abnormal” you, or society, feel it is, that we will not listen to and unconditionally accept. We approach our work with open-minded curiosity and respect. This being said, there are rare situations in which confidentiality cannot be guaranteed and these will be discussed at the beginning of the first session.
What type of therapy do you do?
Julie and Tiffani are well educated and experienced in several modalities of therapy. Since everyone is unique, we borrow from many different theorists and utilise many different approaches depending on what we feel best suits an individual’s needs. But, no matter what approach we use, we believe that the therapeutic relationship that is developed with each client is the most vital component of success in counselling. Do you give homework?
Many individuals like the idea of having homework to help the progress that happens in session to carry on between sessions. Others do not. In many situations there is value in having homework, but again, each individual is unique and homework may be fitting for some and not for others. Homework usually involves building awareness. For example, noticing what happens in your body when confronted with an anxiety provoking situation or noticing emotions in different contexts. Other homework might be more active, such as keeping a journal or implementing a specific activity into daily or weekly routine.
Many clients find it useful to keep a therapy journal. They bring their journal to sessions with them and after sessions, or even during, write down key insights and ideas. Between sessions they may also write down questions or things they would like to explore during session and share these with their counsellor.
How many sessions can I expect to attend?
The number of sessions depends on you. Many people come to counselling with a specific issue they want to tackle. Within approximately 5-15 sessions they usually feel considerable relief and choose to continue periodically as needed. Others decide to discontinue altogether and some choose to carry on and continue exploring themselves and how they manoeuvre through life on a deeper level.
How often should I come in for a session?
This is also your choice and somewhat dependent on what you are seeking guidance with. However, it is recommended that in most cases, at the beginning of the process, once per week or every two weeks is sufficient. Leaving too much time between sessions can lead to the loss of momentum and motivation. Therapy is like exercise in that progress will become more obvious if we take part regularly. However, it is also beneficial to leave at least a few days between sessions so that you have time to digest the work that has been done and give it a chance to play out in life outside of the counselling room.
What if I need to cancel a session?
If you cannot make it to a session, please cancel at least 24 hours ahead of time. There are a limited number of appointment spaces available in a week and there are likely others who would like to use your appointment time. However, it is difficult to fill the space within 24 hours of cancelling, so our policy is to charge the full price of a session for missed appointments or appointments that are cancelled within 24 hours of the appointment time.
My partner and I want to come in for couples counselling, but I also want to do individual counselling. Can I do this?
In order to create a feeling of equality in your couples sessions, one person cannot be seen individually while you are doing couples work. If both partners would like to take part in individual work that is fine, but it is important to realise that the relationship will be a priority in our work and that it will be encouraged to discuss pertinent matters brought forth in individual sessions in the couples sessions (essentially, there cannot be secrets kept that impact the relationship). The other option is to see a secondary counsellor for individual work.
Where did you do your training?
Julie completed her Masters in Counselling Psychology at the Adler School of Professional Psychology, Vancouver campus. This school focuses on promoting and producing three primary features in their program: a.) Socially Responsible Practitioners, b.) Community Engagement, and c.) Social Justice. Julie also hold a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education degree from UBC. She has worked for several years in the education system working with children, teens, and their families.
Tiffani completed her Master of Arts in Counselling at UBC. She has experience working with individuals and is very experienced in working with families and youth.
Do you work with children?
Our office is not set up to conduct counselling with younger children. However, we do work with youth in their teens.
